The series follows its nominal title character, Stan Smith who is a CIA Agent/father. Stan's ditzy wife, Francine who is trying to make up for a wild youth. They have two children Hayley and Steve. Hayley is an eighteen year old girl who is a passionately liberal college-aged activist. Steve is a fourteen year old boy who is a nerdy, wimpy high schooler. The Smith family also has two bizarre nonhumans members with them Roger and Klaus. Roger who is a selfish and sarcastic space alien. Klaus who is an attention-starved goldfish with the brain of a German guy.
